Krav Maga

Krav Maga (KM) is an Israeli Martial Art geared at real life self defense. The term itself means ‘close combat’ or ‘close contact’ in Hebrew.

Originally formulated for use by the Israeli military, it has expanded throughout the world and is today taught to both military and civilians worldwide.

Main principles of KM

Self Defense

I have seen KM described not as a martial art but a self defense system. All of the training and techniques are based on teaching an individual how to survive a real life attack. Unlike many traditional martial arts, KM does not have any set patterns (also known as ‘kata’ in Japanese styles).

Lethal techniques

Techniques used in Krav Maga are direct and efficient, aimed at immobilizing an opponent quickly. Strikes to the vulnerable areas of the body such as the eyes and the groin are common.

Due to the lethal nature of the KM techniques, the system does not have any organized competitions.

Preparation for Real life situations

Krav Maga training aims to prepare an individual for the unpredictable nature of violent attacks. Scenarios prepared for include congested spaces (e.g. around furniture and other objects), low light areas, uneven ground and car parks.

Individuals are also taught how to identify and avoid violent confrontations, which is , in my opinion, a key factor in any self defense system.

Emotional Preparation

During a violent encounter, a person’s emotion can take over and make them very inefficient at defending themselves. KM training involves preparing an individual to respond correctly when faced with the stress and shock of a real life, violent encounter.

Video Clip

I have included the following video clip of a KM demonstration to show you some of the techniques used. Keep in mind it is a demonstration, so there is a certain level of choreography and ‘unrealism’. However, it will give you a general idea of what Krav Maga techniques look like.

Instructors and Locations

As mentioned earlier, KM is now taught in most countries throughout the world.

The main Krav Maga federation is known as the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF) and is headed by the Eyal Yalinov, direct successor to the founder, Imrich Lichtenfeld, who passed away in 1998.

My Personal Recommendation

KM is a style of martial art suited to individuals who are wanting to learn to defend themselves quickly. As the system covers many aspects of self defense beyond combative techniques such as emotional preparation and identification of potential confrontations I would rate it as a very complete self defense system.

KM is not suited for the individual who is looking at competing in martial arts competitions or for the individual looking for the ‘artful’ side of the martial arts (i.e. traditional stances, set patterns).
