Martial Arts Equipment

Learning how to train properly with martial arts equipment can mean the difference between being average and being outstanding.

If you’ve read my page on training you will know that I am really into attribute development. By using the right martial arts equipment you can really boost your attributes to almost super-human levels.

The great thing about using training aides is that often you won’t need a partner. Things like a punching bag, wooden dummy, floor-to-ceiling ball and a mirror can all be used without someone helping you.

When using martial arts equipment, I believe it is very important to learn how to use the equipment at a basic level first. Especially equipment that must be used with a training partner such as focus pads or kicking shields.

Once you have mastered the basics use your imagination to come up with different ways of using the equipment.

With more specialised equipment such as a wooden dummy, it is best to have someone who is proficient at it to show you. It is not effective to learn this type of equipment through a book or a DVD. You risk forming bad habits and of course, injury.

In each of the following sections I will outline different types of training equipment and give you some ideas of how I have used them in my own training.
