Progressive Fighting Systems (PFS) is an organization formed by world renowned Jeet Kune Do instructor Paul Vunak. The organization has two main goals:
To perpetuate Bruce Lee’s art of Jeet Kune Do in an ethical way
To maintain loyalty and respect to Dan Inosanto - Bruce Lee’s top student (and Paul Vunak’s Jeet Kune Do and Filipino martial arts instructor).
The organization fulfills these two goals by teaching individuals and organizations (which have included U.S. Navy Seals, FBI, CIA and DEA) realistic self defense based on Jeet Kune Do concepts and Filipino martial arts.
Main Principles of Progressive Fighting Systems
PFS is aimed at preparing an individual for real life combat. This means that one needs to be prepared for the infinite number of situations that can occur in a real-life encounter. The aim to escape and survive.
Examples of real-life encounters are
Having to deal with larger, stronger opponents
Multiple attackers
Weapons
Training
Ranges of combat
Training involves preparing an individual for the four ranges of combat, which are kicking, punching, trapping and wrestling range (which can involve fighting on the ground).
Being proficient in all of these ranges means that one is never ‘caught’ in an unfamiliar range.
Particular attention is paid to the range of trapping. This is the range where the most dangerous weapons of the body can be used – the head, elbows and knees.
In abiding with Jeet Kune Do concepts, techniques in all ranges are simple and direct, aimed at causing maximum injury to an opponent quickly.
Developing Attributes
Dan Inosanto taught Paul Vunak how attributes can be ‘turbo-charged’ with the training of weapons, such as sticks, knives and staff. These teachings are heavily based on the Filipino Martial Arts.
PFS training incorporates a lot of concepts and weapons from the Filipino Martial Arts. The attributes developed while training with the weapons transfer easily to the empty hand situation.
Emotional and mental preparation
PFS also deals with the very important aspect of emotion during a real life encounter. Emphasis is placed upon the need to be mentally alert yet physically relaxed during a real life encounter.
In a life and death situation, the concept of ‘killer instinct’ is also important to totally overwhelm an opponent at the appropriate time.
Example Video Clip
I have included the YouTube.com video clip below to give you a taste of some of the real world concepts taught in PFS. In this clip Paul Vunak talks about defending against a real knife. As you will see, it is very different from what most martial arts teach.
Instructors and locations
PFS has instructors now located in most continents, although the majority of instructors are located in the U.S.
Paul Vunak has recently introduced a new program called Executive PFS, which has an emphasis on teaching non-martial artists realistic self defense against violence that has recently become more prevalent, such as home break-ins, rape and abductions.

My personal recommendation
PFS is an organization that truly teaches real world self defense. Beginners will learn to defend themselves quickly and advance martial artists will learn what will work in a ‘real life’ encounter.
