The following Randy Couture video clips demonstrate why he is one of the best mixed martial artists today.
Randy Couture is one of my favourite MMA fighters. In his mid forties he still dominates fighters who are 10 to 15 years younger.
One of his keys to success in that he trains smart and listens to his body.
With a background in Greco-roman and freestyle wrestling he likes to ‘ground and pound’ (takes down his opponent, gains the top position and strikes them from there). He fights with a game plan and sticks to it until he wins the fight.
Hope you enjoy the clips.
Training intelligently
The following clip is taken while Randy was preparing to fight against, heavy striker, Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74 on 25 August, 2007. Randy ended up winning the fight against Gonzaga (16 years his junior) by TKO after the referee stopped the fight.
This clip demonstrates how training and fighting intelligently leads to success.
Conditioning is king
Randy Couture is known for his superior physical conditioning. Even though he is often fighting opponents much younger than himself, fans still vote Randy as the better conditioned fighter.
The following Randy Couture video clip shows him preparing for his comeback fight against, 6 foot 8 inches tall, Tim Sylvia. It gives an insight into how seriously he trains to keep up his superior condition.
By the way, he ended up beating Tim Sylvia to regain the Heavyweight UFC title.
Beach muscles don’t help
To be successful in the sport of mixed martial arts you need to train your body in a certain way. You can’t expect to train like a bodybuilder and be successful in MMA. In this clip Randy demonstrates circuit training for mixed martial arts with the use of a barbell.
Can you incorporate such a program in your own training?
