Why do you want to start martial arts? The answer to that question will bring you a lot closer to finding the right style for you. This is because it is important to have a good ‘fit’ between the style that you choose and the reason why you are doing the martial arts.
For example, do you want to do martial arts just improve your fitness? Almost any martial arts style will help you improve your fitness. Some styles, such as Muay Thai or Boxing, will demand very high fitness levels. Do you want to learn how to defend yourself? Although, most styles will be promoted as a form of self defense, my experience is that very few styles will prepare you for real world self defense.

Do you want to compete? Many martial artists enjoy competing at formal competitions or tournaments. This is a great side of the martial arts. Most traditional styles, such as Karate, Taekwondo or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, have highly organised point fighting competitions at a national and international level. Once you have answered the question, “Why do you want to start martial arts?”, it is then time to research different styles to find the ones that fit your ‘why’.
